From Proto-Iranian (compare Pashto سل (səl), Persian صد (sad), Kurdish sed), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćata (compare Sanskrit शत (śatá)), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱm̥tóm. Other cognates include Ancient Greek ἑκατόν (hekatón), Latin centum, Tocharian A känt, Lithuanian šimtas, and Old Church Slavonic съто (sŭto).
