Inherited from Prakrit 𑀯𑀸𑀮𑀅 (vālaa), from Sanskrit पालक (pālaka, protector, keeper). Cognate with Hindustani -वाला (-vālā) / والا (vālā) and Bengali -ওয়ালা (-ōẇala).
