1. A suffix used to form the polite negative present of a verb. The negative form of the polite suffix -ます.

Usage notes

• The verb 出来る (できる, dekiru, “to be able to do”) is used formally as

  出来ます (できます, dekimasu, “can”)

and may be negated as such

出来ません (できません, dekimasen, “cannot”)
