Perhaps from the endings of Italian maestro, German Meister and Bürgermeister, and French bourgmestre.[1]

Suffix edit

-estro

  1. shows the chief or boss of something
    ŝipo (ship) + ‎-estro → ‎ŝipestro (captain)
