Etymology edit

Probably a compound suffix from al (past, over) +‎ -an (adverb-forming suffix) meaning past a certain time, space or number.[1]

From part of Ottoman Turkish ـلنمق (lanmak, passive infinitive suffix after back vowels). Analyzable as -la (forms verbs from nouns) + -n (reflexive marker).
