From Middle High German -wertes, from Old High German -wertes, -wartes, from Proto-West Germanic *-wardas. Compare English -wards, Old Norse -verðr, Gothic -𐍅𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌸𐍃 (-wairþs) and Latin vertō (“to turn”), versus (“toward”).
