Alguer
Spanish edit
Etymology edit
Borrowed from Catalan l'Alguer, of unclear origin. Usually thought to derive from Medieval Latin Aleguerium (literally “stagnation of seaweed”) or from alga (“seaweed”) + -er, but either way from Latin alga (“seaweed”), from Proto-Indo-European *alg-, *alǵ- (“to be dirty, slimy”).
