Dutch edit

Etymology edit

First attested as ambe in 1145, 1154 and 1165. Potentially derived from Proto-Celtic *Ambios (a personal name) or Proto-Germanic *Ambo (a personal name) suffixed with Gallo-Roman Latin -acum. Proposed derivations from Proto-Celtic *ambi (enclosure) or an Indo-European hydronym are unlikely. Formerly an independent village.

See also Limburgish Amie.

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /ˈɑm.bi/
  • Hyphenation: Am‧by
