From Proto-Germanic *burdą (board, table), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰr̥dʰ-o- (board), suffixed zero-grade form of Proto-Indo-European *bʰer-edʰ- (to cut), suffixed form of Proto-Indo-European *bʰer- (to carve, cut, split, rub). Cognate with Old Saxon bord, Old High German bort (board, sheet metal), Old English bord (plank, table).
