From Proto-Germanic *kuttô, *kuttǭ (cowl, woolen cloth, coat), from Proto-Indo-European *gud-nō-, *gʷewd- (woolen clothes). Cognate with Old Saxon kott, Old High German kozza, kozzo (blanket, dress, skirt, coat, cowl).
