From Proto-Germanic *rīkijaz (kingly, mighty, rich), from Proto-Celtic *rīxs (king), from Proto-Indo-European *h₃rḗǵs (king), lengthened-grade form of Proto-Indo-European *h₃reǵ- (to straighten). Cognate with Old Saxon rīki (powerful, rich), Old High German rīhhi (rich), Old English rīce (powerful, rich).
