From Proto-Germanic *þurpą (“village, gathering, cleared land”), from Proto-Indo-European *tr̥b-, zero-grade form of Proto-Indo-European *treb- (“dwelling”). Cognate with Old Saxon thorp (“village”), Old High German dorf (“village, estate”), Old English þorp, þrop (“village”).
