Probably cognate with Proto-Germanic *Burgundī, Sanskrit [script needed] (bṛhatī)[Devanagari needed], Avestan [script needed] (bǝrǝzaiti)[script needed]. In that case it goes back to Proto-Indo-European *bʰr̥ǵʰn̥tih₂, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰerǵʰ- (high).
