From Proto-Indo-European *dʰéh₁tis (putting, placement) (through an intermediate form *dʰētís with oxytonic stress[1]), from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁- (to do, to put). Corresponds to *dōną +‎ *-þiz.
