      From Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰéntis (act of killing, blow), from *gʷʰen- (to strike). Equivalent to a hypothetical verb *benaną (from which *banô (murderer), *banjō (wound), with *gw- > *b-) +‎ *-þiz.
