Proto-GermanicEdit

EtymologyEdit

From Scythian *kanabis (compare Farsi kanab, Ossetian gän), a compound of Finno-Ugric *kéne (hemp) + *piš (to burn; nettle) (compare Estonian kena, and Hungarian peszeg, 'to burn'). Although a loanword, it was borrowed early enough for the word to be affected by Grimm's law, shifting k to h and b to p. Cognate with Latin cannabis and its descendant, English canvas.

PronunciationEdit
