Derived from an unattested noun *kalzaz, *kalzą, from Proto-Indo-European *gols-, o-grade of *gels- (to call; voice, cry).[1] Cognate with Lithuanian gãlsas (echo) and Proto-Slavic *golsъ (Russian голос (gólos, voice)).
