Appendix:Taxonomic affixes

Taxonomic names have often been formed by affixation.

The International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants and International Code of Zoological Nomenclature have provided rules, which change from time to time. Before the bodies that published those works were created there were widespread common practices, mostly based on Classical Latin and Greek, but which often conflicted.

Principally it is the suffixes that frequently characterize the rank of a taxonomic name that are prescribed by the Codes.
