Appendix talk:English surnames from Anglo-Norman

Call me crazy, but this appendix should contain Norman surnames, and nothing else. Not 'English surnames from Anglo-Norman'. Mglovesfun (talk) 22:17, 13 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Urgent need for revision edit

This list is full of inaccuracies. I'm English and in England when we say 'Norman surname' we mean surnames that came to England when the Normans invaded in 1066, and were carried by the new (Norman) nobility, like Beaumont. This excludes names like Carpenter, because, okay, maybe the word 'carpentry' is French in origin but that doesn't mean the surname is. Ditto Johnson for the same reasons--I mean it's got the CLEARLY Germanic 'son' in it, for God's sake. Knight is just plain wrong. This list really needs revision, and should cite a source for every doubtful name. Names like Beaumont and Percy are generally known to be Norman, but unobvious names should have a citation from an etymological surname dictionary, and all the incorrect names should be deleted.

In a word, 'yes' you're totally right. Mglovesfun (talk) 16:50, 25 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
