Borrowed from Turkmen Aşgabat, from Classical Persian عشق‌آباد ('išq-ābād, literally city of Ashk), compound of عشق ('išq, Ashk) +‎ آباد (ābād, city), Ashk/Arshk being the name of the founder of the Iranian dynasty of the Arsacids.
