They loved nursery rhymes, especially those that had hand movements. Songs are great - "Bingo" when you do dog stories like Clifford. With bear stories, we did "Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, Turn Around". When you use books, try to use those with a limited amount of text and large illustrations like Audrey Wood's The Napping House as well as alphabet and counting books. I didn't have any puppets, but I'm sure that puppets would work well.

It was a stuffed red plush dog that we saw in Target and it looked a great deal like Clifford. We gave it to him and said, "look Mick, Clifford!" He just grinned and grinned. We have to read Clifford the Big Red Dog to him over and over.

The puppy came right to me, and I took it home. It was horribly flea-infested, so I wound up spending all kinds of money getting it groomed and checked out by a vet. This dog must have been the inspiration for the story of Clifford because I swear the damn thing doubled in size every day for the next week. It was like having a freakin' horse in the house. Fortunately, I had a friend stop by who seemed taken by the dog and he adopted it. [...] Thinking I'd never do that again, almost the same exact thing happened fifteen years later, only this time I was stepping out back of the office for a smoke break. [...] And again, like Clifford, the dog grew like a weed, only not quite to horse size.
