  1. A taxonomic subclass within the class Liliopsida – the grasses, rushes, sedges and similar plants, now included in the commelinids. [since 1967]

Usage notes edit

  • Under APG III (2009), the members of this group have become the core of the commelinids, a clade which also includes the palms and gingers. The subclass Commelinidae is likely to become dated.
