From Middle Limburgish dadel, from Italian dattilo, from Latin dactylus, from Ancient Greek δάκτυλος (dáktulos, literally “finger”), a folk-etymological alteration of a word from a Semitic source such as Arabic دَقَل (daqal, “variety of date palm”) or Hebrew דֶּקֶל (deqel, “date palm”).
