Etymology edit
First attested as tochingen in 802-822. Potentially derived from the dative plural form of Old Frisian Dokko (“a personal name”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ingi- or, alternatively, from dokke (“type of plant, dock”). Compare Docking.
