Etymology edit

From Middle Dutch elfdusentmaechdendach. Equivalent to elfduizend maagden (eleven thousand virgins) +‎ dag (day). After the mediaeval legend of Saint Ursula, that told that eleven thousand maidens were martyred alongside her.
