First attested as bi de Ovelgunne in 1720. Likely derived from Middle Low German Ovelgunne (domicile of the Devil), here used in a figurative sense to refer to a piece of land considered haunted or unfortunate. A nearby ruined castle may have inspired the toponym. Compare Gun.
