From Middle High German vorhe, from Old High German forha, from Proto-West Germanic *furhu, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *furhō.
While the word is now used especially in the south, the form with loss of post-liquid -h- is originally chiefly Central German; compare the variant above. Cognate with English fir.
