Text Appearing Before Image: the purpose of preventing theperspiration from the body dampening the powder, exam-ined his pistol carefully, tried the trigger, and then returnedand took a seat in the ladies waiting-room, and as soon asthe President entered advanced behind him and fired twoshots. These facts, I think, can be relied upon as accurate,and I give them to the public to contradict certain falserumors in connection with this most atrocious of atrociouscrimes. All through his illness President Garfield displayed thehighest personal courage and firmness, submitting himself,with childlike faith, to the directions of his physicians, butat the same time bearing up against every discouragingsymptom with a courage and determination that both aston-ished and encouraged his medical attendants. One of thechief hindrances to his recovery was found to be the intenseheat of the summer, but he bore all the discomforts arisingfrom it with patience and cheerfulness.
