Etymology edit

From Gardner +‎ -ella (taxonomic suffix). Named after American bacteriologist Hermann L. Gardner (1912–1982), who discovered it in 1955.

  1. A taxonomic genus within the family Bifidobacteriaceae – gram-variable-staining facultative anaerobic bacteria of which Gardnerella vaginalis is the only species.
