First recorded as a given name of Latvians in 1923. From Russian Генна́дий (Gennádij), from Ancient Greek γεννάδας (gennádas, noble). Name of early saints venerated in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Cognate with the historical English and Latin Gennadius.
