Borrowed from Albanian Gjirokastër, from Greek Αργυρόκαστρον (Argyrókastron, literally “silver castle”), from άργυρος (árgyros, “silver”) and κάστρον (kástron, “castle”) (from Latin castrum (“fort”)).
