From Old Norse Herjárdalr (“valley of the Härje river”), from Härje, Härjån + dalr. The first element *har, *her could mean "heap of stones," compare hǫrgr (“cairn, heap of stones”). Cognate with Norwegian Herjådalen, Herjedalen and Icelandic Herjadalur.
