From Old Norse Herjárdalr (valley of the Härje river), from Härje, Härjån + dalr. The first element *har, *her could mean "heap of stones," compare hǫrgr (cairn, heap of stones). Cognate with Norwegian Herjådalen, Herjedalen and Icelandic Herjadalur.
