Etymology
edit
From Swedish abbreviation of the Idrotts- (“sports”) + föreningen (“club”) Kamraterna (“comrades”), Helsingfors (“Helsinki”). There are many sports clubs along the Swedish-speaking coast of SW Finland which include the words Idrottsföreningen Kamraterna in their name and their abbreviations are differentiated from each other by adding in front of the letters IFK one or two letters to indicate the hometown. In speech the word HIFK may be pronounced as one word, often adding an "i" in the end, or the letters H-I-F-K may be read out individually.
