haug + -e- + sund, with the meaning "the strait by the farm 'Haugar'", first part is the plural of haug (“heap, pile”) from Old Norse haugr (“howe, cairn”), from Proto-Germanic *haugaz (“height, hill”), from Proto-Indo-European *kewk- (“hill, elevation”). Last part from Old Norse sund (“swimming; narrow waters (which you can swim across)”), from Proto-Germanic *sundą (“swimming, sound, strait”), from earlier *swumdan, from Proto-Indo-European *swm̥tóm.
