Hindeloopen
Dutch edit
Etymology edit
First attested as hitinkufe and hintinlvofe around 822-825. Derived from a compound of Old Frisian hinda (“hind, female deer”) and hlop (“jump, leap”), apparently referring to a lower section of fencing which deer could jump over. The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an older version of the Frisian name. Compare Hindlip.
