Holk
Dutch edit
Etymology edit
First attested as hollic around 1325. Etymology uncertain. Perhaps derived from Middle Dutch hol (“low-lying”) and wijk (“settlement, village”). A derivation from hol (“hollow”) is also possible (compare Old English holc (“hollow”), Old Norse holkr (“pipe, ring”), Middle Dutch hulc (“type of cargo vessel”)).
