First attested as caswyn in 1409. Etymology uncertain. Proposed etymologies include a derivation from the plural form of Latin casa (“cottage, house”) or a compound of Vulgar Latin *cassanus (“oak, Quercus sp.”) and Middle Dutch winne (“leased farmstead, farm”).
