First attested as kesnic in 1102. Derived from Latin Cassinius (“a personal name”) suffixed with the Gallo-Roman suffix -acum.

Both places are first attested with -st- (Castnec, Castenicha, 9th c.). Therefore thought to be from Latin *Castenacum or *Castaniacum. Alternatively perhaps from *Cassiniacum like the Dutch above.
