Sino-Vietnamese word from 京 (“capital”). Doublet of kinh.
Originally used by lowlanders to distinguish themselves from those from the highlands, whom they dubbed người Trại (“outpost people”) or người Mường (“mountain villagers”).
Muong speakers (or at least, speakers of Mường Bi) call Vietnamese Chỡ (literally “market”), also referring to their capital Kẻ Chợ.
