Etymology edit

First attested as Kl. Wiske in 1664. Calque of West Frisian Lytse Wiske, derived from lyts (little, small) and wiske (wet pasture, pasture which floods in winter). The element lyts was added to distinguish the settlement from Grote Wiske.
