Etymology edit

From Middle High German knödel, from Old High German *knodila, diminutive of knodo (knot), whence Central Franconian Knodde, ultimately related to Proto-Germanic *knuttô (knot).

Compare German Knödel. The Central Franconian form was partly merged with related but distinct Knuddel (clump).
