Two main origins:
- Borrowed from German Kolberg, a habitational surname for someone who came from the city of Kołobrzeg, now in Poland.
- Borrowed from Norwegian and Swedish Kolberg, an ornamental surname composed of the elements kol (“coal”) and berg (“mountain”).
