Etymology edit
First attested as koefoerde, kwfoerde and koefoerdt in 1543. Borrowed from West Frisian Kûfurderrige, derived from a compound of the hydronym Kûfurd and rige (“row of houses, embankment”). The hydronym derives from a compound of ko (“cow”) and furde (“ford”).
