Etymology edit

First attested as koefoerde, kwfoerde and koefoerdt in 1543. Borrowed from West Frisian Kûfurderrige, derived from a compound of the hydronym Kûfurd and rige (row of houses, embankment). The hydronym derives from a compound of ko (cow) and furde (ford).
