- Used to refer to the Scots language traditionally spoken in Lowland Scotland. Scots is a Germanic language closely related to English and descended from northern dialects of Old English. Gaelic, a Celtic lange is traditionally spoken in the Highlands of Scotland. The term Doric has also been used but during the 20th century came to be associated with the dialects of North East Scotland.
