First attested as Hlottingen wolde and Lwttingen wald in 1511. Calque of West Frisian Lippenwâlde, derived from a compound of Old Frisian Lippinga (“a surname”) and wald (“marsh forest, swamp forest”). Compare Lippenhuizen.
