Etymology edit

First attested as liticawerum in 1381. Calque of West Frisian Lytsewierrum, a compound of Old Frisian lītik (little, small) (from Proto-West Germanic *lūtil, from Proto-Germanic *lūtilaz) and the dative plural form of weer (artificial mound used for habitation) (probably related to *warjan (to ward off, defend, protect)). The element lyts was added to distinguish the settlement from Grotewierum.
