Transliteration of Arabic مَحْمُود (maḥmūd, literally “praised, laudable”), the passive participle of the Form I verb حَمِدَ (ḥamida, “to praise”), from the triconsonantal root ح م د (ḥ-m-d). The name Muhammad comes from the same root, and has a similar meaning.
