Etymology

edit

First attested as middegael in 1387. Compound of Middle Dutch midde (middle, mid-) and a second element of unknown etymology. Proposed etymologies for the second element include a derivation from a compound of either Proto-Germanic *galan- (rage, sing) or gal (bile, yellow) and aa (body of water, river) or from Proto-Germanic *alha- (homestead, farmstead) prefixed with the collectivising prefix ga-. Compare Gaal, Galder and Maasniel.
