Etymology

edit

First attested as utrathorp in 1315. Borrowed from West Frisian Olterterp, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian utra (outer, outward) and thorp (village). The second element was gradually reinterpreted as terp (artificial mound used for habitation). The toponym contrasts with Ureterp.
