Etymology edit

From Middle Mongol ᠥᠭᠡᠳᠡᠢ (ögedei), probably via a recent borrowing from late Ottoman Turkish اوقتای (Oktay). It became popular as a male given name in Turkey in the beginning of the XXth century, although used as family name by persons born at least in 1880s.[1]
